Akkeshi’s History
Akkeshi Maritime Museum
Akkeshi’s fishing industry has flourished since the Edo Period, continuously supporting the people’s lives with abundant herring fishing, kelp fishing, and whaling. In order to teach future generations about this relationship with the ocean, the Maritime Museum was erected across from the town hall in 1988. Additionally, the planetarium on the second floor is widely used as a learning facility to give children hopes and dreams about space.
